This has been the year of filming. ALUNA started shooting in July. When it was all over, we took the finished film for review to the Kogi. The Mamas approved but said that the film did not end correctly – there needed to be a vision of a positive future, or the exercise was pointless. So they took over production. I brought back the crew, the Mamas took charge, and the final sequence was directed by them. The night before the main shoot Mama Shibulata’s eldest daughter (Francisca’s sister) went into labour. He disappeared, and returned some hours later shivering and wet. I wrapped him in my rouana. Next day, I was told he and I would be going into the river together, dressed.

I was being set up.
